SOUTH AUSTRALIA WITH A DIFFERENCE - ADELAIDE HILLS

Wednesday, Nov 1, 2017

Day 1: ADELAIDE HILLS

This morning we head for the hills, literally!  We join the South Eastern Freeway and make our way to Hahndorf - Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement and a superb “flashback” to the nineteenth century with its shops, eating houses and attractions housed in authentic surroundings.  We have time here at leisure to enjoy the quaint shops and cafes before settling into our accommodation.

Day 2: ADELAIDE HILLS

Today we will spend the full day exploring the Adelaide Hills.  Our first stop is the Beerenberg Strawberry Farm, fully Australian owned and all products are made at this farm.  From here we’ll embark on a unique enterprise on a behind the scenes tour of the biodynamic Jurlique Farm. We will see and learn about the nature and science behind their skin care products including the history of Jurlique and the display garden.  We head to the Stanley Bridge Tavern in Verdun for lunchSit back, relax and enjoy the country air as we travel through the pretty townships of Aldgate and Stirling.

Day 3: MORE OF HAHNDORF

This morning we take a guided tour around historic Hahndorf township visiting Germanic cottages built in the 1830s and hearing special local stories along the way.  Next we visit the home and studio of the world renowned artist Hans Heysen.  He settled in Hahndorf in 1908 and built his studio, “The Cedars” in the style of a Bavarian Chalet. We will enjoy a guided tour of the house, the studio and the extensive gardens. This was his base as he painted extensively onsite in the hills around Hahndorf and in the Flinders Ranges.  It will be a memorable visit.

Day 4: TOURING AND CRUISING

We have arranged breakfast and an informative talk with a difference at Buzz Honey, a family owned business producing hand selected and harvested raw honeys from a variety of locations across South Australia and specialised regions of Australia.  After, we re-join our coach and head to Murray Bridge to join Captain Proud for a delightful luncheon cruise on the Murray River.  Back on dry land we visit The Sidewood Estate Cellar Door at Maximilians, with sweeping views over the lake, the Cellar Door and deck is the perfect place to relax after a day of touring.
