Add Puffing Billy Railway to your excursion itineraries!

Step into a timeless world of wonder with Australia's favourite steam train: Puffing Billy, located in the heart of the Dandenong Ranges. Recognised as one of the finest preserved steam railways in the world, Puffing Billy operates every day of the year, except Christmas Day, thanks to the tireless efforts of our volunteers.

Experience the magic of steam train travel from the moment you arrive with the sight of the historic locomotives preparing for departure at the station, the smell of steam billowing out of the vessel's chimney and the evocative sound of the train’s whistle.

Built in 1900 and carrying anything from passengers to timber, livestock, potatoes and plants, Puffing Billy is now a major tourist attraction conveniently located only one-hour east of Melbourne that invites visitors to experience a century old tradition.

Ride in open-sided carriages over the rolling hills, down the valley and into the forest on the original 24km mountain track between Belgrave and Gembrook and enjoy the simplicity and beauty of the region.

Puffing Billy excursion trains depart a minimum of four times a day, every day of the year except Christmas Day, with extra trains running through peak periods.

Self-drivers will need to take a return journey so that they can get back to their car, caravan, campervan or metro train at the end of their experience.

Lakeside to Gembrook – An Altogether Different Puffing Billy Experience!
Your journey begins from Lakeside station, located within Emerald Lake Park. Experience the thrill of travelling over timber trestle bridges, including the tallest bridge on the entire line, as you pass through Wright forest, before taking in expanding views of rolling hills and the rich open farmlands of Gembrook.
Gembrook is a picturesque country town where guests can enjoy the quaint cafés and restaurants in the main street, or picnic in the park next to the railway station, while the engine is prepared for the return trip.
A car will be needed to get to Lakeside Station as there is no public transport in or out of the park, making this a perfect choice for self-drive visitors.

Steam & Cuisine Luncheon
Experience the grandeur and charm of first-class dining in Puffing Billy's lovingly restored heritage dining carriages and indulge in a delicious seasonal three-course menu or Grazing Platter filled with a selection of cured meats, fine cheeses and Devonshire Tea. The Steam & Cuisine Luncheon Train runs selected weekdays (excluding Victorian public holidays) and the return journey lasts approximately 3 hours.
