Historic Parramatta & Olympic Site

This morning we head west to Parramatta the second oldest settlement in Australia began its history as "The Cradle City" of Australia. It was the site of Australia's first Orchard, Vineyard, Tannery, legal Brewery, Woollen Mill, Observatory, Steam Mill, Market Place and Fair. Founded just after Sydney itself in 1788 as a place to graze animals and grow food for the fledgling colony. Parramatta, though considered a 'suburb', is a city in its own right and actually the geographic centre of the Sydney Metropolitan Area. It is a large business centre with a smattering of historically very important buildings. First stop is Old Government House. Located in Parramatta Park, this is Australia’s oldest public building. This former vice-regal residence houses the nations finest collection of colonial furniture. Whilst here we take a guided tour of the House for an insight into its contents and history. Next is a visit to Experiment Farm Cottage. Built C1834 by colonial surgeon John Harris on the site of Australia’s first land grant, issued to convict farmer James Ruse, the Cottage boasts a collection of colonial furniture and exhibits. From here we head to the historic Elizabeth Farm, Australia’s second oldest building and the oldest existing European house in Australia. Constructed in 1793 by John & Elizabeth Macarthur, the house is situated in a glorious 1830’s garden and is an enchanting introduction to Australian History. We enjoy a delicious lunch at the Elizabeth Farm Tea Rooms on arrival then have time to explore. This afternoon we make our way back towards Sydney via Homebush where we take a drive around the 2000 Sydney Olympic Site and enjoy a tour of ANZ Stadium. Relive the incredible Olympic Games triumphs and tears and step up on the Olympic dais for the ultimate photo souvenir. Go deep under ANZ Stadium into the change rooms and experience the place where fearless teams prepare to do battle for the Bledisloe Cup and Rugby League Grand Finals, and see where Australian Football and State of Origin idols psyche themselves up before the big game. After our tour we return to our hotel to relax and freshen up before dinner.
