Day 2 |
Sydney & The Eastern SuburbsThis morning we take in the city sights as well as visit “The Rocks”, the birthplace of Australia. Travel through the Argyle Cut, where convicts toiled. See Observatory Hill originally known as Windmill Hill and hear stories about the colourful characters of The Rocks and how the community fought to preserve the area. Admire the Colonial and Georgian architecture and take in the view of the beautiful harbour, Luna Park and the Harbour Bridge. Our morning tour includes a guided tour of the Sydney Opera House before some free time for lunch and a little free time. This afternoon we head to Vaucluse House. It survives as one of Sydney's only 19th century harbourside estates with house, kitchen wing, stables and outbuildings and is still surrounded by ten hectares of formal gardens and grounds. Built in 1803, Vaucluse House was once owned by William Charles Wentworth, father of the Australian Constitution, his wife Sarah and their immediate family of 10 children who lived in the house from 1827–53 and again in 1861–62. This gothic style mansion includes both lavish entertaining rooms and functional 'downstairs' areas. Vaucluse House paints a picture of the social aspirations and lifestyles of the Wentworths and of the servants, both convict and free, who lived and worked there. The interiors include original Wentworth pieces together with furniture, furnishings and collections of the early to mid 19th century. After our tour we enjoy some of the sights of the Eastern Subusrbs including Watsons Bay and Bondi before heading back to our hotel. |
