CAIRNS & THE TROPICAL NORTH

FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND

Nature bestowed a range of simply stunning natural attractions on Far North Queensland. The Great Barrier Reef, which gained World Heritage status in 1981, is the largest and most complex expanse of living coral on earth. It extends from north of Cape York to south of the Tropic of Capricorn. Also worthy of World Heritage listing (1988) are the rainforests of the wet tropics, and in particular those of the Daintree area north of Cairns.

Day 4

Atherton Tablelands

The Atherton Tableland is a unique place in Australia. What makes it so special is the combination of its geographic location in the Tropics (between 400 and 1100 metres), its pleasant climate and the volcanic activities that have shaped large parts of its landscape. This morning we leave the coastal plain and head onto the Tablelands and Mareeba where we make a stop at the Australian Coffee Centre. From here we travel onto Atherton and the Crystal Caves where we explore a labyrinth of caves on 2 levels over 250m² to discover spectacular and colourful natural crystals, ancient fossils, and rare delicate minerals. From here we continue our sight seeing including a visit the Curtain Fig Tree, the most unusual and certainly the most visited tree on the Tableland! We also visit Lake Barrine – a beautiful volcanic crater lake – where we a cruise on the lake before returning to Cairns.
