Day 1 |
To DarwinUpon arrival in Darwin, our touring coach will meet us as we set off to discover Australia's northern gateway. The present city centre was established in 1869 and contains most of its remaining historic buildings such as the Old Police Station, the Old Court House and Government House. We see the new Parliament House built on the site of the Darwin Post Office bombed during World War II plus the many other fascinating sights of Australia’s northern gateway. We will drive through Fannie Bay, popular with sailors, windsurfers and water skiers. The area is home to the Museum & Art Gallery of the Northern Territory and The Cyclone Tracy Gallery. A more unusual attraction is the Fannie Bay Gaol, which operated from 1883 to 1979 and was one of Australia's toughest. The area around Darwin is the traditional home of the Aboriginal Larrakia people. Their culture and history is vividly represented at The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory and in the Aboriginal plant walks at the Darwin Botanic Gardens. One of their most important sites is Old Man Rock (Dariba Nunggalinya) which is visible at low tide off the Casuarina Coastal Reserve. Some claim Cyclone Tracy was caused by someone disturbing this site. Late afternoon we check in to our hotel for some free time before dinner. |
