DARWIN, TOP END, KAKADU & THE GHAN TOUR

THE NORTHERN TERRITORY TOP END

In the first section of our tour we spend some time in Darwin, which has grown from an early and remote outpost to a thriving modern capital city. On its eastern doorstep is the Kakadu National Park. Kakadu covers almost 20,000 square kilometres, contains 275 species of birds, 75 species of reptiles, 25 species of frogs and an estimated 10,000 species of insects. In Gold Kangaroo comfort (First Class) we board the Ghan for the 2979 kilometre journey, through the heart of the Continent, from Darwin to Alice Springs. In 1929 when the first Ghan departed from Adelaide to Alice Springs it was intended that it would one day connect through to Darwin. Now more than 70 years later that dream has become a reality. Apart from the stunning scenery we will be pampered with Gold Kangaroo Service – superior day and overnight sleeper accommodation, stylish restaurant dining car, delicious freshly prepared meals, Lounge and Bar Car, a dedicated Cabin Steward, complimentary toiletries bag and much more.

Day 2

Darwin

This morning we discover Darwin with a tour of the city sights. The present city centre was established in 1869 and contains most of its remaining historic buildings such as Brown's Mart, the Old Police Station, the Old Court House and Government House. We see the new Parliament House built on the site of the Darwin Post Office bombed during World War II, the areas most affected by Cyclone Tracy plus the many other fascinating sights of Australia’s northern gateway. We will drive through Fannie Bay, popular with sailors, windsurfers and water skiers. The area is home to the Museum & Art Gallery of the Northern Territory and The Cyclone Tracy Gallery. A more unusual attraction is the Fannie Bay Gaol, which operated from 1883 to 1979 and was one of Australia's toughest. The area around Darwin is the traditional home of the Aboriginal Larrakia people. Their culture and history is vividly represented at The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory and in the Aboriginal plant walks at the Darwin Botanic Gardens. One of their most important sites is Old Man Rock (Dariba Nunggalinya) which is visible at low tide off the Casuarina Coastal Reserve. Some claim Cyclone Tracy was caused by someone disturbing this site. This afternoon we visit Darwin's newest tourist attraction, Crocosaurus Cove which allows visitors an up close, personal view of massive saltwater crocs, hatchlings and juveniles plus the worlds largest display of Australian reptiles. Enjoy the underwater world within our 200,000 litre freshwater aquarium and witness metre long Barramundi being fed by divers along with other species of freshwater fish and turtles. Other activities include The Big Croc feeding and meet the reptiles. Check out our Turtle sanctuary overlooking the licensed cafe and visit the World of Crocs display. All this and more is at Crocosaurus Cove. This evening we are transferred to the Sky City Casino for a special "Star-beque" dinner - a gourmet BBQ under the stars with live entertainment.
