Day 9 |
Fitzroy Crossing to BroomeToday we are off to Broome, situated on the coast at the southern tip of the Kimberley region. We have a short detour from the highway as we stop to see the Boab Prison Tree, 7 miles south of Derby which was used in the early days as an overnight lock up for prisoners before the final trek into Derby. We then continue to Broome. Broome is bounded by wide sandy beaches and turquoise water and enjoys a warm climate with plenty of sunshine. The discovery of rich pearling grounds off the coast in the 1880s led to the foundation of Broome township in 1883. By 1910 Broome was the world's leading pearling centre. |
