AUSTRALIA'S RED CENTRE

CENTRAL AUSTRALIA

Central Australia, as we call it, is a vast ancient area of semi desert, grasslands, mountain ranges and spinifex slopes, divided down the middle by the mighty Stuart Highway. It is at the heart of our continent and has been of great interest to visitors since the first European explorers, Charles Sturt and John McDouall Stuart. It is at the heart of our continent and has been of great interest to visitors since the first European explorers, Charles Sturt and John McDouall Stuart. Our tour takes us through Port Augusta to Coober Pedy, Ayers Rock/Uluru, Kings Canyon, Alice Springs and many other outback centres. To most people the highlight will be “the Rock”. Rising 348 meters from the red desert sands and with a girth of 9.4ks, Ayers Rock is the world’s largest monolith (single stone). Daily, thousands of visitors from all over the world are drawn to experience its mystical impact, to see the changing colours from red to orange to lilac and to learn about its role in the Tjukurpa (the Creation stories and Laws) of the ancient Aboriginal culture.

Day 4

Alice Springs to Kings Canyon

This morning we travel along one of the most scenic desert roads in the country – the Mereenie Loop Road that connect the old Hermannsburg Mission, located beyond the Western McDonnells, with Kings Canyon, 170 kms away. The Mereenie Loop Road can be a little rough but the scenery is sensational. (Please note the Mereenie Loop Road is subject to local weather conditions and an alternative route may have to be taken to Kings Canyon if the condition of the road is not safe.) We arrive at Kings Canyon early afternoon. Our lunch stop today is at Kings Creek Station The afternoon is available to explore Kings Canyon via either the Ridge Top Walk or the shorter walk into the floor of the Canyon.
