AUSTRALIA'S RED CENTRE

CENTRAL AUSTRALIA

Central Australia, as we call it, is a vast ancient area of semi desert, grasslands, mountain ranges and spinifex slopes, divided down the middle by the mighty Stuart Highway. It is at the heart of our continent and has been of great interest to visitors since the first European explorers, Charles Sturt and John McDouall Stuart. It is at the heart of our continent and has been of great interest to visitors since the first European explorers, Charles Sturt and John McDouall Stuart. Our tour takes us through Port Augusta to Coober Pedy, Ayers Rock/Uluru, Kings Canyon, Alice Springs and many other outback centres. To most people the highlight will be “the Rock”. Rising 348 meters from the red desert sands and with a girth of 9.4ks, Ayers Rock is the world’s largest monolith (single stone). Daily, thousands of visitors from all over the world are drawn to experience its mystical impact, to see the changing colours from red to orange to lilac and to learn about its role in the Tjukurpa (the Creation stories and Laws) of the ancient Aboriginal culture.

Day 3

Western MacDonnell Ranges

This morning we follow Namatjira Drive as we travel into the Western McDonnell Ranges on our way to Glen Helen. The views are spectacular especially on a sunny day as the early morning sun catches the rich colours of these ancient mountains. Today the term Glen Helen is applied to the lodge, the gorge near the lodge and the surrounding 368 hectare Nature Park controlled by the Conservation Commission of the Northern Territory. No one knows who named the region but it was one of the first pastoral leases in Central Australia. We enjoy an inspection of the Lodge, the chance for a short walk into Glen Helen Gorge and some lunch. On the way back to Alice Springs we make several stops with the opportunity for a swim in one of the gorges. Highlights this afternoon will be Standley Chasm and Simpsons Gap. Finally, before arriving back into 'the Alice" we stop at the grave site of the Reverend John Flynn, founder of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Our final dinner in Alice Springs is at Bojangles Restaurant. Bo's Restaurant offers the ultimate Territory dining experience with an extensive a la carte menu featuring our famous Bo's Outback Mixed Grill, steaks and many other local specialties.
