AUSTRALIA'S RED CENTRE

CENTRAL AUSTRALIA

Central Australia, as we call it, is a vast ancient area of semi desert, grasslands, mountain ranges and spinifex slopes, divided down the middle by the mighty Stuart Highway. It is at the heart of our continent and has been of great interest to visitors since the first European explorers, Charles Sturt and John McDouall Stuart. It is at the heart of our continent and has been of great interest to visitors since the first European explorers, Charles Sturt and John McDouall Stuart. Our tour takes us through Port Augusta to Coober Pedy, Ayers Rock/Uluru, Kings Canyon, Alice Springs and many other outback centres. To most people the highlight will be “the Rock”. Rising 348 meters from the red desert sands and with a girth of 9.4ks, Ayers Rock is the world’s largest monolith (single stone). Daily, thousands of visitors from all over the world are drawn to experience its mystical impact, to see the changing colours from red to orange to lilac and to learn about its role in the Tjukurpa (the Creation stories and Laws) of the ancient Aboriginal culture.

Day 2

Alice Springs

Breakfast followed by a tour of "the Alice". We start with a visit to ANZAC Hill for panoramic views of the town and the surrounding area. Next is a visit to the Old Telegraph Station and the original Alice Springs. Next is the Alice Springs Royal Flying Doctor Base. This base was established in 1928 by Reverend John Flynn. His vision was to provide a 'mantle of safety' for the isolated communities of inland Australia. Using air links and radio, the service provided medical aid to people living, working and travelling in the outback. Today it operates 21 bases and covers more than 7,150,000 square kilometres. The Alice Springs base was opened in 1939 to provide emergency and preventative medicine to outlying communities and stations throughout Central Australia. We now have time for some lunch before our afternoon visit to the Desert Park - one of the newest attractions in Alice Springs. This is a multi-million dollar wildlife and fauna reserve opened in March 1997 and set in the foothills of the stunning MacDonnell Ranges. Within the park three major Australian desert habitats are featured - the Desert Rivers, the Sand Country and the Woodlands which, between them, are home to more than 120 species of animals and 350 species of plants. The show "Birds of Prey" is not to be missed! Afterwards we return to the hotel.
